With my background in Gender Studies, I costume design as a means to explore identity and expression. I utilize my art as a powerful tool to bring humanity and truth to the characters I design for. I enjoy thinking of the characters as real people, influenced by their gender/race/class/age etc, who make real choices about how to dress and present themselves to the world. The very heart of my work is to humanize and respectfully represent people--especially those of marginalized groups and specifically queer people of color.
I have a strong background in costume design for theater, opera, and dance and have transitioned into film/tv. I was on the Tony Award winning costume design team for Hello Dolly! on Broadway as one of the assistant costume designers to Santo Loquasto. I am accustomed to efficient problem solving and working hard while being meticulous.
For the last couple of years, I have shifted my focus to film/tv because that medium is changing faster--it reaches a wider audience and tells more diverse stories including voices of queer people of color. I was the costume designer for PUFFY, a pilot produced by Refinery29 and TBS, as well as the webseries BKPI produced by Super Deluxe. I have been the wardrobe assistant and key costumer to Joshua Hurt on a short film and two TV shows. There is nothing that compares to the feeling of being on set. Being able to see the magic of filmmaking unfold before your very eyes! I love being by monitor and being able to perfect last looks.
